WELLINGTONIANS are now being urged to stay out of the CBD for the remainder of Monday, if not longer, while inspections are carried out following the city's large quake.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown told a press conference most of the damage from Sunday's 6.5 quake in Cook Strait is in Wellington's CBD.
Advice that people should avoid the CBD until midday has been extended to the end of the day and council engineers are carrying out visual inspections.
Greater Wellington Regional Council Mayor Fran Wilde says part of the city's port, which is on reclaimed land, has collapsed and one container has been lost into the harbour.
